Cancer can start in any part of the body, and is triggered when cells grow out of control and crowd out normal cells.
Throat cancer refers to tumors that develop in the throat, voice box or tonsils.
Most cases of throat cancer begin in the flat cells that line the inside of the muscular tube.
Signs and symptoms of the disease include:
The disease is triggered by genetic mutations that occur in the cells. The mutations continue to grow uncontrollably, and accumulate to form a tumor.
Scientist do not yet know what causes that genetic mutation. But there are a number of things that can increase a person's risk of throat cancer, including:
The American Cancer Society estimates there will be around 13,543 new cases of laryngeal cancer (cancer of the voice box) this year in the US, while 3,620 are likely to die from the disease.
As with many forms of the disease, if throat cancer is not diagnosed in the early stages there is a greater chance it will spread to other organs in the body.
In Big Ang's case the disease spread to her lungs and brain.
She revealed on Monday that doctors told her she was suffering stage four brain and lung cancer.
Stage four means the lung cancer has spread to more than one area in the other lung, the fluid surrounding the lung or the heart, or other parts of the body through the bloodstream.
A stage four brain tumor is typically called a glioblastoma and is where the cells are actively dividing and growing.
Survival rates for stage four lung and brain cancer are very low.
Only between two and 13 of every 100 people diagnosed with stage 4 non small cell lung cancer will survive for five years after diagnosis, according to Cancer Research UK.
